A social Issue - Children's Rights

“The child, for the full and harmonious development of his or her personality, should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding. The child should be fully prepared to live an individual life in society…in the spirit of peace, dignity, tolerance, freedom, equality and solidarity.”

As a nation, we are beginning to see an increase of recognition towards children's rights and their abilities to speak for themselves but i feel New Zealand has not been educated enough on this issue. This is a social issue due to the lack of understanding and knowledge people have surrounding children's rights and is a major concern in the early childhood sector of New Zealand.

In future posts I aim to give a better understanding to this issue and answer questions surrounding children's rights.

This includes:
  • What regulations are currently in place for the protection of children and their rights?
  • How does the New Zealand Early Childhood curriculum Te Whaariki (Ministry of Education, 1996) support children's rights?
  • How can teachers advocate for children and what are the implications in an early childhood setting?

Stay tuned..........
